Diabetes is a chronic disease that can alter the normal healthy lifestyle of anyone. It is caused when the pancreas refuses to produce insulin or when it cannot produce insulin correctly.

Insulin is the hormone that helps in the regulation of blood sugar. So, in the absence of insulin, excess sugar is sent to the bloodstream, resulting in hyperglycemia which can lead to damage to the body cell.

People living with diabetes are often advised to undergo regular medical checkups to maintain safe health.

However, diets have been proven as one of the easiest to manage diabetes. But food consumption should be based on meals that will not cause a spike in blood sugar, like honey.

In this article, we will be sharing studies of the effect of Manuka honey for diabetics.

Manuka Honey and Diabetes

It is true that sugar is a great source of energy in man as it also plays a vital role in our health. But it is also detrimental for diabetics. However, there have been alternatives of sugar suitable for diabetic people, those who cannot process sugar.

According to studies, honey has been proven to provide some ways of managing diabetes mellitus.

Honey is a healthy alternative for refined sugar like turbinado, powdered sugar, white sugar, and cane sugar. This is because honey contains antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that are beneficial to the body.

A teaspoon of honey contains about 21 grams of sugar, 3.59g of water, 17.25g of sugar, 1 mg calcium, mg, phosphorus, 1 mg sodium, 0.05 mg zinc, 0.1 mg vitamin C, and 11 mL of potassium.

Honey also contains some vitamin B. 21g of white sugar, on the other hand, has 80 calories and doesn't contain many other nutrients.

Honey also has a low glycemic index and helps to increase the C-peptide level which helps to sow the production of insulin.

Manuka honey is different from regular honey because they contain some antibacterial properties.

Studies also revealed that the presence of the antibacterial and antimicrobial properties on the honey could lower the inflammation due to diabetes.
